Hi Follks,

I have quite of bit of info on the Tompkins families in the province of Ontario, Canada.? Unfortunately, not a lot on my family.

I am hoping to connect my line to the other families in the region.? Your help would be welcome & appreciated.

My gggfather William Tompkins b. England about 1815 and at least three of his sons, Civil War vet Jesse b 1847 Orange Co. NY, Nathan b 1860  and Ed all spent time in Ontario.  Looking for info on them.

These are not names that I have run across in my searches.  Most of the Tompkins arrived much earlier, in the late 1700's as loyalists.
Which area of Ontario did they settle?  You should be able to find them in the 1881, 1891 and/or 1901 census of Ontario.  Some of these are available on-line, free.

See: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html

A quick search of the 1881 & 1901 census did not turn up any of the fellows that you mentioned, nor did a couple of other Ontario sites.

Sorry.

DNA results show that I am connected to the family of JA Tompkins, Ontario. My line started in Westchester NY, it is said that Abraham was a loyalist and sent to Canada. I descend from his son John and his first wife Tamar Shute>William Shute>William Edgar>William Shute>Gilbert J Tompkins, my father. This family lived in Ossining, Greenburg, Scarsdale, then finally to Brooklyn NY. Any others out there?

I have been researching every line, trying to piece together each and every strand, but most I have found aren't in Canada. My line descends from the Irish Tomkins of Londonderry, Ireland and came over in about 1846. I have do a couple of Williams (showng no wife or children) born 1817, if that is any help. Could you possibly tell me his parents or wife?

Thanks,
Peter

Hello everyone... I'm sure in one way or another we are all related :) I have just begun to search my father's family history, Harold Powell Tompkins (08/1940-04/1997). I do know many of the family members were from Ossining, NY.  My Grandfather, Russell Dudley Tompkins, Sr. lived in Schultzville, NY.  I'm starting there.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated to this beginner.

Thank you in advance!

Through DNA testing I have found several Ontario, Canada Tompkins close matches.  My first known ancestor is Fortunatus Tompkins b. 1759, d. cir. 1850 in Triangle, Broome County, NY.  He is first found in the 1790 census for Coxsackie, Albany County, NY.  I do not know where Fortunatus was born or who his parents or siblings are.  I have no information on family migrating to Canada early on, but obviously some very close family did.  The known migration for my Tompkins was Albany County-Delaware-Chemung-Broome-Steuben to Allegany County, NY.
