I can only trace my family line in Barbados (or anywhere else, for that matter) back to 1804, when Menifred (also documented as Minifred) LYNCH baptised herself and her first child in Barbados.

None of the children have a father listed in the records, but from a later will our "patriarch" is referred to as Hamlet LYNCH. Our Hamlet may be one of two or three Hamlets listed for the time in Barbados, but there is no definitive birth, baptism, marriage, death or burial record for him or for the "matriarch", Menifred.

Over time and research I believe this Hamlet could have been from Ireland, from Scotland or from England. With the lack of records he could have been a sailor or military - in those days the military (army and navy) pretty much came and went as they pleased without formalities. Hamlet appears to have stayed around fror twenty years or more to sire and be father to his children, then disappears off the face of the earth as discreetly as he appeared on it.

Judging by the property acquired and position rapidly attained in Barbados by his son and grandson, it appears Hamlet was also quite wealthy.

So, I'm looking for a Hamlet LYNCH, or a variation on that Christian name, who was known to have gone to the West Indies - could even have gone to the North American Colonies first - and may have come back (empty handed, without his Caribbean family) 30 years or more later on.

The year 1769, when Hamlet was born, is now the "brick wall" for my research, taken from Hamlet's will... calculated from his age and the year when he died. I cannot document anyone before that.

There is no birth, baptism, marriage, death or burial record for Hamlet Mayers Lynch in Barbados that I have been able to find.

Indications are that Hamlet Mayers Lynch was a free mulatto, but I am sure from the wealth that he was somehow connected to - probably sired by - one of the Irish merchant Lynch family resident in Barbados in the day.

I personally suspect his father was probably a son of Anthony and Mary Lynch named Hasel / Hassell Lynch, because he is recorded as fathering other children with free negro women about the same time.

Any and all possible connections or references for Hamlet Mayers Lynch would be very welcome...
