After that I don't know who his family is.  I think it is a Walter Byrd.  But I don't know if there is a middle name to Walter or if Walter is the middle name.

I'm hoping for a little guidance on interpreting the results of our DNA tests. I've been working with both my cousin Richard Byrd and with Harold Byrd (6th cousins 1x removed) on this project. Both sets of 37-marker test results have been completed and show Richard and Harold matching on 34/37 markers...enough to be declared "a lineage," according to what I've read on the FTDNA website. According to our traditional research, Mounce Bird (b. 1733) and Andrew Bird (b. 1729), sons of Andrew Bird (b. 1695) of Berks Co., Pa. are the branching ancestors.

A 75.49% probability that they've shared a MRCA within the last 300 years is shown on the time predictor chart. It states that a generation is presumed to be 25 years, which would put that MRCA at about 12 generations back. However, our traditional genealogy research shows this most recent common ancestor, Andrew Bird b. 1695, to be 9 generations back from Harold and 8 generations back from Richard (in both cases, I've counted Andrew as the first generation and Richard & Harold as the last). Am I correct in believing that the 300 year span is derived from a formula calculating the anticipated rate of mutation in the markers where the tests differed? I also calculated the average generation spans of the actual individuals in both lines and found an average generation span of 30.8 years for Harold's line and 35.5 years for Richard's. Dividing the 300 years by these numbers gives us very close to the actual number of generations in each line.

I just wanted to check to see if I'm interpreting the test results appropriately. The time predictor shows a 99.1% probability of a MRCA within the last 600 years, but we know that it was much more recent than that. So, how do we calculate when the MRCA actually lived, when taking traditional genealogy into consideration? I've read the explanation about why refining the number of generations reduces, rather than increases, the probability, but the explanation "does not compute" in my brain.

Any clarification will be appreciated. Also, I notice that Richard's results page code "B-19" has not been added to the pedigree on the Patriarch Page that I submitted for him so that others can match the test results with the lineage.
