My pedigree... I have only a "hunch" that this James is descended from Oxford and one of his two orphaned sons... seem to have hit a brick wall - I'm going to start tracing the location of the adoptive parents - James somehow winds up in Wake Co.

Hi Freda, your Ephraim Oxford is the youngest son of my Joshua (son of James).  That name is one reason why my "hunch" is that James/Joshua/etc are descended from Oxford.
My grandfather lived as a "hired hand" with E.O. Beasley (age 80+) and his 3rd wife when he was only 16 years old in 1910... E.O. was a Civil War veteran too.  Would love to share information with you... and I'd love to build a complete tree of all the Joshua Beasley descendants one day!

My established family tree begins with John Beezley who settled in Ohio. He came from Virginia. Knowledge of his father and grandfather is only conjecture at this point. Through the 1700's, spellings varied, but by the late 1700's my line almost exclusively settled on "Beezley". Old Captain John Beezley's four sons and one known married daughter migrated west from Ohio in the early 1800's.
