We are a Buckley family from an Irish couple who migrated to America in the 1840's from Ireland.  All family stories are that the family is Irish--although Buckley also is an English name.  Our oldest known ancestor is James Buckley who married Ellen Healey (presumably in Ireland).  They came to America with four known children--Patrick, Thomas, Mary, and Margaret.  The first records which I'm sure relate to James and Ellen are when they bought a business building on the main business street of Covington, KY, plus a residence nearby in the early 1860's.  I believe, but cannot prove as yet, they moved to Covington from Cincinnati, Ohio, just across the Ohio River.  Information on Thomas Buckley's death certificate by a son-in-law is that Tom was born in Kilkenny, Ireland.  There were numerous errors on the death certificate so I'm not sure place is accurate.  I don't know if "Kilkenny" refers to the city, the county, or both.  Some family stories say they were from Limerick or Tipperary.  I have not found them on passenger lists (at any rate, that would tell port they sailed from, not their residence) nor death certificates for any except Tom.  James and Ellen are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Covington, KY.

We are interested in DNA testing for males in our line with Buckley surname through Family Tree. Would like to be notified of other Buckley patrilineal results.

There are many Buckley's from England but as stated in (Dictionary of Surnames) by Hawks & hodges " Buckley, Anglicized form of Gael. O Buachlla, descendant of Buachaill. also spelled Buckleigh, O'boughelly, O'buhilly. It also lists Buckley as English; habitation name "buc,"he-goat" and Leah, "clearing or wood". Buckleigh, Bulkeley.   From (The Historical Research Center) " though Buckley is also an English surname, few Irish-born Buckleys are of English extraction, and in Ireland Buckley is usually an anglicized form of the Gaelic O' Buchalla. Buachalla means boy,cowherd,sevant.
