Wish that I could send in my DNA, but the Waddell name ended with my 3rd gr-grandmother Martha Waddell born in 1804 in Hanover Co VA.  She is in my straight maternal line and I have been studying the family for many years.  I feel quite certain that her parents were:
James Waddell / Waddle who married Ann Bigger in Richmond VA in 1787. She was probably born in Prince Edward Co VA in the 1760s,  the daughter of John Biggers, and maybe his wife Elizabeth Cary. (Bond for James and Ann's marriage was posted by William Patman who had not long before married Susannah Bigger, daughter of John.)  I do not know James' age except that he was over 45 years for the 1810 census in Hanover Co VA, and stopped appearing in tax lists there in 1816, after which Ann Waddell began appearing.  They were apparently the parents of at least three surviving children:
John Waddle  born ca 1790 (in Hanover tax lists by 1811, and in 1850 census there in 1850)
Susannah Waddell  b. in 1802 and married in 1824 William West in Hanover Co VA.  They had many children, and named one son John Biggers West.
Martha Waddell  b. in 1804, died in 1844, buried in Hanover Co VA.  She married in 1831 Joseph Tyree also of Hanover Co VA.  I descend through their daughter Elizabeth Tyree born in 1833, who married Adolphus Henry Tyree; then through their daughter Lelia Waddell Tyree born in 1760 who married Augustus Washington Figg.

Studying the names in Hanover Co, I have been struck that a Shadrick Woodall was in the 1810 census there - though not living close to James Waddell.  There was a Shadrack Waddell born in New Kent Co in 1738, birth recorded in St. Peters Parish, son of William Waddell. It certainly seems possible that this man was a relative of James Waddell.  The Woodall DNA project now has a request for any paternal line descendant of Shadrack Woodall to test for a match - none of his line has yet registered.  I'm wondering if he was mistakenly placed as a Woodall descendant, and was actually a Waddell.  Hope that some descendant of his will come forward.

Since Ann Bigger apparently came from Prince Edward County VA, and there were a number of Waddell families who also migrated there, I'm hoping to find out if perhaps James also was born there.  There was one other Waddell in Henrico Co VA when James married Ann - William Waddell, a goldsmith.  Does anyone know anything about him?

Would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about any of these folks.  Thanks,
Kathy Beals

Hi Kathy,  I am part of the Woodall DNA Project, being a descendant William Woodall who left his will in 1796, through his son Charles.     The answer to your question is no.  Shadrach Woodall was not mistakingly placed as a Woodall descendant.  He is included in the will of his father William Woodall.   Refer to his father's will below:

Goochland County Virginia Will Book 17
William Woodall 1797

In the name of God Amen, I William Woodall of the county of Goochland being weak in body but in perfect sense and memory do make this my last will and testament.  I give to my son Charles Woodall, my son John Woodall, my daughter Mary Childress, my son Shadrach Woodall, and my daughter Sarah Woodall one shilling to each of them.---All the rest of my estate I lent to my wife Marion Woodall during her natural life at her death I give it to be equally divided between my son Benjamin Woodall and my daughter Susanna Woodall to them and their heirs forever.  I constitute and appoint my wife Marion Woodall & my son Benjamin Woodall Executors & Executor of this my last will and testament.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and offered my seal this twenty ninth day of February 179six.

             his
William W Woodall- seal
            mark

signed sealed published and declared as
his last will and testament in presense of
Tho' Lourman
Tho' Harding
Thomas Nickoll

Kathy,

Shadrach had the following 4 sons: John who married Marie/Martha Green, George (George's 4 sons: Charles, Ralph, Andrew and Taylor) Josiah Woodall who m. Nancy Scott, and Rueben Woodall who m. Pamela Foster (Rueben had 2 sons: Rueben T. & Edward R.). The descendants of Shadrach went on to live in Hanover, Richmond, Alexandria, & Halifax, VA. I have some of his descendants tracked down through the 1930 census and afterwards.  We may never get a descendant of Shadrach to test, possible reasons:  they do not know their line, the male Woodall's died out in the family, or they do not share an interest in researching family history.  But then, I'd like to believe we still may find a descendant of Shadrach.

Best Regards,  Jeff Woodall

Studying the names in Hanover Co, I have been struck that a Shadrick Woodall was in the 1810 census there - though not living close to James Waddell.  There was a Shadrack Waddell born in New Kent Co in 1738, birth recorded in St. Peters Parish, son of William Waddell. 1850 Federal Census Perry Twp, Davis Co., IA 3d day of Sept. 1850
30/30
John Waddels 53 M Farmer 600 A  b PA
Hannah 22 F OH
Jane 17 F OH
Lucetta 15 F OH
Mary 12 F OH
Harlan 10 M OH
Charles 6 M OH

This is the family of Mary W. Waddle who married Emsley Park Marsh.  She appeared with him in Wicondah Twp, Davis Co, IA with her two brothers on the same census.  However, her brother Harlan appears to have died in the Civil War.  It is unknown if Hannah was a second wife of John's or eldest daughter.

Father John Waddle (s added by censustaker) was apparently deceased before 1860.

Mary's mother is unknown.  She died in Bloomington, IA when her children were quite small.  Her father married Sarah Francis Atterberry who also lived in Wycondah.  On the 1860 census she stated she was born in Indiana.  We believe she may not have known her birthplace.

Does anybody recognize this family?

Hi, grandejim.  Thank you for your interest in the Waddell project.  I noticed that your pedigree does not appear to be in chronological order, as the birth years jump around a bit.  To ensure that it is posted correctly on the patriarch page and that the generations are not mixed up, I am going to need to know from you exacltly what order it should be in.  Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing back from you!
