I am completely at a loss and am on the verge of completely giving up on my family research....
My name is Robin L. Brooks and I am (I think) a descendant of Joseph E. Haney.  The story goes that my grandfather Stanley Thomas Brooks was placed in an orphanage in McDowell County, N.C. by his father, possibly Joseph following a murder of some sort committed by his father Joseph.  Later my grandfather Stanley changed his last name to Brooks to try and forget his past.  I am not sure of any of this and my father Thomas William Brooks is the last surviving son of Stanley and won't tell us what he knows.
