My Father's name was Wayne Hobbs (no middle name). ?He was born on the north shore in Mass. ?He was a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. ?He was an M.D.

His father's name was Charles Wesley Hobbs. ?He was also a gradute of Harvard college. ?He was an educator at Mass. University Extension.

His father's name was possibly Samuel Hobbs, but I'm not sure.

The family lore is that a landed gentleman in England had seven sons. ?The estate went to the eldest son, and (as the story goes) my forebear came to the colonies to seek his fortune.

That is, in fact, all that I know.

Family Pedigree of Robert L Hobbs
Robert L Hobbs from MD, to NC/SC to GA.  He came to Georgia in 1790 and raised his family there, a few of the children stayed in Georgia, the others went west to settle MS, AR, TX and NM and parts unknown.

My particular line stayed in Georgia until my dad left in the late 1930's.

Robert L Hobbs b 1754 Queen Anne MD d 1845 Greene GA m Mary M Caldwell
Robert Hobbs Jr  b 1805 Greene GA d 1856 Gwinnett GA m Nancy Jones
          Robert H Hobbs b 1856 Gwinnett GA d Jun 13, 1913 Fulton GA
Mary Anne Hobbs b 1901 Fulton GA d 1974 Fulton GA
Sterling Jack Hobbs b 1917 Fulton GA d 1996 Wayne MI.

This line is well documented.  Robert L Hobbs Sr came to NC/SC as a young man with his father which he didn't name.  He married in SC and served in Rev. War in SC.

Robert's children:  Curtis, Sarah, James, Joseph, Nancy, Nathan, Isham, Polly and Robert Jr.
Robert Jr's children:  Robert H
Robert H children:  Mary Anne, Lillie Mae, Samuel Alfred, William Robert and Henry Grady.

I am hoping to talk one of the direct descendent's into taking the DNA test.

1. MAURICE HOBBS was b. Abt. 1615 in England, and d. 04 Jan 1705/06 in Hampton, NewHampshire, USA. He married SARAH EASTOW Abt. 1642 in Newbury, Massachusetts, USA, daughter of WILLIAM EASTOW. She was b. Abt. 1624 in Ormesby St. Margraet England, and d. 05 May 1686 in Hampton, New Hampshire, USA.

Notes for MAURICE HOBBS:
Is it possible that Maurice Hobbs came to the new world from Rangeworthy, Tytherington, or the Thornbury, area of Gloucestershire County in England? All of these villages are within a few miles of each other. Will abstracts and Bishop Transcripts from this County show that a Maurice Hobbs had a father Robert, and Robert had a father Thomas. It also shows that a Maurice Hobbs had 2 sons Thomas, and Robert. We do know that a Maurice came to the new world around 1641 could this be
him?
Gloucestershire, England, Probate Records, Wills 1615-1624 for Cromhall, Rangeworthy,
Tytherington & Wickwar, L.D.S. Family History Library film # 0091394-00913938. The will dated 1620 Maurice Lenny of Thornbury and Rangeworthy, mason 1620
It states sons William & Richard; son in law Robert Hobbs; godchild: John Hobbs & Maurice sons of Robert Hobbs.

Gloucestershire, England, Probate Records, Wills 1636- 1650 Thornbury and oldbury on the Severn (river), L.D.S. Family History Library film series # 0091406-0091413. The will dated 1641 Dorothy Dole of Rangeworthy; it states that her grand children are Morris, Mary, & Martha children of son in law Robert Hobbs. Grandson Morris & his sons Thomas & Robert

Gloucestershire, England, Probate Records, Wills 1590-1599 for Cromhall, Rangeworthy,
Tytherington & Wickwar, L.D.S. Family History Library film # 0091384-0091387. The will dated 1577 John Hobbs of Tytherington had four children Richard, John, Ellen, and William, it also states John had a brother Robert. The will dated 1582 Thomas Hobbs of Rangeworthy, Children Elizabeth, John, Robert, and one other daughter Alice Hambyn; wife Elizabeth exec.

Rangeworthy, Bishop's Transcripts, Gloucestershire, England, 1575-1640
1613 under marriages June 1, Robert Hobbes & Alice Dole
1638 under baptisms April 1, Thomas son of Maurice Hobbs
1639 under baptisms Robert son of Maurice Hobbs.
Is It possible that Maurice had 2 children before he came here to the new world, and his parents are Robert Hobbs and Alice Dole, and grandparents are Thomas and Elizabeth Hobbs.

" Maurice ( or Morris ) Hobbs, according to tradition, left his native country under the following singular circumstances. He had been paying his addresses to a young lady, who, from some cause not mentioned, turned him off; and thereupon, he determined to emigrate to America. When the lady knew of it, she relented, and knowing he would pass her residence as he proceeded to embark, placed herself in his view, hoping to bring about a reconciliation. To her grief, she found him inexorable ; and
although she accosted him with the affectionate enquiry, " Whither goest thou, Maurice ?" yet he deigned not to turn his head or to look upon her. And they never saw each other more. " ( History of Hampton page 747-745 Genealogical and Biographical.)

Piscataqua Pioneers it states " Maurice was at Newbury in 1642,and was a
proprietor in Hampton 23 Feb 1645/46. He was a selectman. 1659 and constable 1667, a juryman many times from 1650 through 1693. He m. Sarah Eastow, ae c. 44 on 12 Oct 1669, Dau. of William Eastow, and liv. with his fa-in-law on Eastow/Estow land. He d. Jan 1706. Sons Nehemiah and James served in the King Philip's War. Sources: DOW; NLD; PR67. icp". " Home site: The Hobbs home site in Hampton is located at 188 Winnaacunnet Road and is still owned by a descendants ( 1997 )."
I believe the date of their marriage as written in Piscataqua Pioneers must be a
mistake, unless they married after all their children were born. In the book New England Marriage Prior to 1700 it states 1642; Newbury.

Another confusing inconsistency is that Maurice Hobbs name may have been spelled Morres Hobes when he came from England to America around 1640. Sarah Sweet the wife of Morris Hobbs son of Maurice Hobbs, died Dec 18, 1717 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery Hampton, New Hampshire. The double stone with Sarah on one side and their son Joseph on the other side. The left side of the stone reads HERE LYES Y BODY OF SARAH HOBES WIFE TO MORRES HOBES
AGED 66 YEARS DIED DEC 18, 1717, on the right of the stone it reads HERE LYES Y BODY OF JOSEPH HOBES AGE ABOUT 25 YEARS DIED DEC 21st 1717. Why do the spellings of Hobbs (Hobes ) and Maurice, Morris [ Morres ] differ from that which Dow and other's have written?

A recent find of a grave marker in North Hampton New Hampshire reads:
Maurice Hobbs born in England 1611 died 1701, aged 91 yrs.
Sarah Hobbs died 1698, aged 89 yrs.
Maurice Hobbs died Apr. 6, 1710 ae 88 yrs.
Sarah Hobbs died Sept. 13, 1731
Maurice Hobbs born 1714, died May 1, 1756
Mary Hobbs died Apr 7, 1806 ae. 79 yrs.
Gravemarker located: Dec 2005, Erected by J.L. & J.W.F. Hobbs at Center Cemetery North Hampton, New Hampshire.

Hi, cehobbs.  If you can provide any dates (birth and/or death) that correspond with the information you provided, that will allow me to add your pedigree to the patriarch page.  Thanks so much and good luck with your research!
