Marcum in Wayne, Cabell, and Logan counties WV

Hi all. My name is Allyson Marcum.  I am new to this family tracing and am trying to find out which Marcum family to trace to find my ancestry.   One of my family cemeteries is on Tick Ridge in West Virginia. I also have a family cemetery on top of a mountain in West Virginia where the Stroud family lives(d).  I remember meeting Shorty Stroud when I went to visit my grandfather as a child.  He also lived in Wilsondale? at Turkey Creek.  My father was born in Accoville Hollow in 1948.  My grandfather was Van Marcum who was born May 7, 1924 and died in July of 1982. He was a miner.  I believe his parents were Jessie Marcum and Martha Ferguson who were married. I also think he had siblings that are still living, Garner, Ethel, and Evenay.   As a child I remembered hearing stories of a man they referred to as Papaw Pig, but I'm not sure what his name is.  My grandfather married Helen Mae Duncan in Logan county in 1946. They had four children: Lewis Edward who is my father, Patti Lynn, William Van, and Jewel May.   Any additional information would be helpful to me. 
Also could someone explain how this DNA testing works. I am curious.

Believe that Josiah Silas Marcum b 2 May 1759 d March 1846 is Joseph M Marcum father

Have no proof as in dna testing to support this though
