Hello,

FTDNA's Big Y test has discovered many new SNPs downstream of Z255 and L159.2, which are predicted for our group.  As more folks take the Big Y test or individual SNP tests as they are developed it may be possible to connect these SNPs to genealogical times.

I encourage everyone to visit and join the FTDNA R-Z255 and Subclades Project located here:
https://www.familytreedna.com/public/R1b-L159.2/

If you have any questions please post them.

Thank you,

Jim

In June 2014 I ordered the Big Y test from Family Tree DNA.  The results identify my terminal SNP as R-L159.2, which is downstream of R-L21 and R-Z255.

Additionally the Big Y discovered multiple downstream (more recent) novel variants.  Among these is the newly discovered SNP R-Z16434.

A total of nine Big Y kits are known to share this marker.  These results can be viewed at Alex Williamson's R-L21: The Big Tree.
http://www.littlescottishcluster.com/RL21/NGS/R-Z255.html

Of the nine kits, two men trace their families to England, five to Ireland, one to Sweden and one to Norway.

Based on my Z16434 result, I have encouraged several of my DNA matches at Family Tree DNA to test for this SNP.  To date seven of these men, including four lineage 1 Deaton project members, have tested positive for Z16434.

If you are are a member of lineage 1 and have not yet tested for this new SNP, I encourage you to do so.  The test can be ordered from FTDNA from the Advanced Tests section on your yDNA upgrade page.

Additional information about the Big Y test is located here:  https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/y-dna-testing/big-y/

Another lineage 1 member has tested positive for the newly discovered SNP Z16434.

This brings to five the number of Z16434+  lineage 1 project members!

Family Tree DNA offers the Z16434 SNP test as part of Advanced Y-DNA tests.

With the current 15for15 coupon code the regular cost of $39.00 is reduced to just $24.00.

This is an excellent opportunity for any lineage 1 member to test for this new SNP.

To order just log in to your FTDNA home page, select Upgrade, then Advanced Tests.

Under Test Type select SNP and under Marker type in Z16434.

Hurry as the coupon code expires on 28 February.

Please email me at deatondna@gmail.com with any questions.

Based on additional matching Big Y results it would now appear that the current terminal SNP for the Deaton Lineage I members is Z18136.  This is downstream of both R-Z255 and the new subclade R-Z16434.

This is shown by Alex Williamson in the The Big Tree: R-Z255:

R-P312>L21>DF13>ZZ10>Z255>Z16434>Z18134>BY582>BY581>Z18138>Z18136

(The R-Z255 Big Tree is located here: http://www.littlescottishcluster.com/RL21/NGS/DisplayTree.php?blockID=16 )

I still recommend that interested Lineage I males consider ordering the Z16434 SNP test from FTDNA.  However, Z18136 is also available for testing at FTDNA.  A positive result for Z18136 will confirm Z16434.

Please contact me at deatondna@gmail.com with any questions.

Thank you,
