Hi :)

I received notification of a match from FT DNA, but wasn't too excited as I have received several matches before, which didn't turn out to be very close.

I would be very interested in expert opinion on this one, though.

My brother took a Y DNA test, with another company, which has been transferred and which he is about to update. Thus the person he matched with had had 37 markers tested, of which my brother has so far had 32 tested. At present, then, we don't know whether or not those 5 extra markers will turn out to be the same or not.

But of the 32 markers tested for both individuals, 31 are the same.

Ie. Of the markers on the usual 32 marker test, the first 29 and the last two are identical. It is the 30th marker on the list that differs (15 for one; 17 for the other).

I may be asked for a male surname, but I don't have one, as this is a line which inherited a female surname.

I appreciate that I should be patient and wait for my brother's update, but, based on what I have so far, what are your thoughts, please?

Thank you! :)

If the marker which doesn’t match is DYS456 (17 against 15) no matter, they could descend from a previous 16 by 1 mutation. If the haplogroups is R-L23 Balkan cluster and the other values are the same I think that the link is very close.

Hi Maliclavelli :)

Thank you very much for your thoughts :)
I really appreciate your help :)

But no, I'm sorry, this is not our Albanian-Greek heritage, it is (likely to be) all British Isles. (I'm trying to get all of my great grandparents' lines DNA tested while I can.)

I'm going to double-check, because I have simply been sent a list of numbers by e-mail, by the person in question, but I'm pretty sure that it is DYS456 where the 15 - 17 difference exists.

The other gentleman has been given: R1B1A2

FT DNA say that the likelihood of a shared ancestor with this man is:
75% + at 6 generations
90% + at 10 generations
95% + at 13 generations
99% + at 20 generations

Does that sound right based on what we have so far?

I do appreciate that further tested markers could turn out to be different, and thus indicate more distance between us, but, even if that happened, would these similarities still be of importance?

Thanks :)

Of course I should look at the markers values: if they are very diffused (Atlantic Modal Haplotype), they are worth less, if there are some values distant from those, they would be worth more.

Hi again,

I just read on Wikipedia that Atlantic Modal Haplotype (AMH) / haplotype 15 is:

    DYS388 = 12
    DYS390 = 24
    DYS391 = 11
    DYS392 = 13
    DYS393 = 13
    DYS394 / DYS19 = 14

My brother's results for these markers are similar, but not identical:

    DYS388 = 12
    DYS390 = 25
    DYS391 = 11
    DYS392 = 13
    DYS393 = 13
    DYS19 = 14

I must double-check his results, though, because the test was completed elsewhere and some markers results had to be altered to fit the FT DNA style of recording results ~ but none of the above.

We share DYS390 = 25 with the new contact. This could be important, I think???

Thanks. :)
I'll know more when my brother has updated his markers.
