hi, im in the uk, and my paternal line derives from around standish in lancashire where we appear to have been a family of blacksmiths upto the mid 18th century (my line at least).

ive recently had my dna investigated (by 23andme) and ive found i have quite a lot of distant relations in america (including jimmy buffet).  as shaw is the 126th most common name in america (according to 23andme) its pretty likely that somewhere in my ancestral tree some people migrated there.

i also note that the creator of the bowie knife (james black if i remember rightly) was taught and became son in law of a william shaw - blacksmith.

so im wondering if any one here from the usa knows of any immigrant from lancashire by the name of shaw, particually if its an alexander, john, william or thomas, or is there a website listing early immigrants? (i know of ones from the mid 19th cent but thats too late for me).
