I just ordered a 12-marker y-dna test for my dad at the very low sale price. I know that is not a big test, but I can't afford a lot right now. I figured I would get my dad's foot in the dna testing door and purchase upgrades and other tests later.

My dad will be 82 in September.

As a group administrator and co-admin for a number of projects, I get notices of orders by project members. There have been a lot of upgrades to 111 str markers purchased during this sale (which ended last night) and a fair number of Family Finder tests. I am really glad for the latter, since more FF tests means a greater possibility of FF matches.

I wonder how many new y-dna kits were sold. I hope quite a few. We need a bigger y-dna database.

Lots of Family Finder orders. That's good. Hopefully some new matches will pop up.

Well, my dad emailed me to say he got his FTDNA kit, did the cheek scraping routine, and mailed it in. I hope he gave the inside of his cheek a good scraping!

Now for the waiting, which seems to be the main thing in this hobby. Waiting and jawboning, that is.

I ordered the 12-marker y-dna test for him, as I said, to get his foot in the dna testing door, but I am actually looking forward to adding a mtDNA test to that eventually. After all, I already know what my dad's y-dna is like. (For you wags who are thinking, "Don't be so sure!", I already have other y-dna matches that confirm that my dad is my dad.) I'm curious about his mtDNA haplogroup, however, and I would like to order the Family Finder for him, as well.

I got the notice that my dad's kit has been received by FTDNA. I guess it won't go to their lab until next Wednesday, though. Lab day with FTDNA has been Wednesday as long as I can remember.
