Could this be the Solomon Collins of Melungeon fame, or maybe his son? Lewis Jarvis was an attorney in Hancock County, Tennessee whose mother was a Collins and who lived among the Melungeon community of Newman's Ridge. He wrote an article in 1903 that identified the first Melungeons as, "Vardy Collins, Shepherd Gibson, Benjamin Collins, Solomon Collins, Paul Bunch and the Goodman Chiefs." Many of the "original" Melungeons moved on to Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio before the Civil War -- maybe Solomon Collins or his kids went to Clay County, Kentucky (not too far from Newman's Ridge).
