Its members have been seeking and even setting up alternative sites. Some are now here.

I hope people like myself don't make the same mistake again. Investing in an informal, weakly funded organization is going to result in a infrastructure that is not maintained, goes down, and takes a while to get back, if ever.

This is the real world of I/T. It's not that simple. Yes, as an old programmer, I can tell you a good programmer can create anything. It's SMOP... it's only a Simple Matter Of Programming.  However, service, support and availabity require a real plan, organization and investment.

There are all sorts of rumors floating around. If anyone really knows what's going on, they are keeping it to themselves.

The only consistency in them is that it won't be back anytime soon.

I'm not sure it matters. They've had long down times on occasion. This is the record. If its not dead, it should be.

With DNA forums gone, DNA rootsweb Ken-less etc and traffic not exactly massive here its a real crossroads for forums relating to this hobby.  I hope there is gravitation to one site, hopefully here, and not massive fission into lots of small sites.

I think the dna-forums crowd will mostly follow Loe (aka "Warwick") to the site he arranged. I'll stay here.

Not this guy.. This site seems to be the most stable and has Mikewww and others who have really helped to better understand P312 and its subclades.

After partially recovering from a tornado I had to get a new computer, car is totaled, $32,000 worth of roof, siding, window damage, etc;   power surges damaged the computer.  Not only that but I am finding out that DNA-forums is gone!!!!!  ARGGG!

At any rate I have been registered here for about 2 years but mostly lurking here and on DNA-forums-participating sometimes.  I am trying to talk Steve Gilbert into coming here as well!

We're glad you're here. I used to live in Arkansas and Texas. I've been through a few tornadoes. Glad you made it.

Whew! dealing with FEMA, glass companies, auto repair,  and the homeowners insurance company as well as contractors.etc.

I'd rather be finding out that my ancestors were indeed French!

P.S. Just hauled about 6 pickup loads of sticks out the the yard so I could mow!

I was hoping the same thing. Hopefully, this forum will stick around long enough. We definitely need a time machine that would allow us to pull referenced postings off of dna-forums. Just seems like a lot of information was lost with the site going down.

The WorldFamilies Forum has been stable for a long time - and I expect that will continue.  My server is typically paid ahead.   I serve as interim administrator for a large number of projects, so I figure the word would get around pretty quickly if my time was up.  My "better-half" is heavily involved with WorldFamilies and would keep things going for at least some period of time.  Then, it would be up to some user(s) to take it over and keep it going.  If a truck runs over both of us, my son has the access codes and would take an interest in to what's next.  (he actually created the Forum)   I think that is a decently solid succession plan

Sounds like a solid basis for the foreseeable future.

I don't manage any kits or projects, but the question is a good one in general. I'm aware of more than one FTDNA project where the Admin has become unresponsive, for whatever reason.
