We are very curious to read the paper of Fu et al. (among them of course Svante Paabo) announced by Ian Logan on DNA-Rootsweb: Fu,Q., Rudan,P., Paabo,S. and Krause,J. Complete mitochondrial genomes reveal Neolithic expansion into Europe
PLoS ONE (2012).


By a first glance to those haplogroups it seems to me that the expansion happened into Europe but from somewhere in Europe and not from elsewhere. This would be the final victory for me.

Annie Mouse writes: “This is not IMO population replacement from the East arriving with the neolithic, it is an expansion from the existing southern European population”.

This is what I have always thought: the Italian Refugium, which was close to North Balkans. It would be sufficient to look at the mt haplogroups to understand that these H have nothing to do with ancestress out of Europe.

P.S. Annie Mouse writes on "Dienekes' Anthropolgy blog", who closes his site to me. If he thinks to be right, why he does this?

“MtDNA assemblies of the Croatian samples
In total 27 samples from Northeastern Croatia and 23 from Northwestern Croatia (Table S1) were sequenced and resulted in a total of 12,553,272 merged reads. Using a custom iterative mapping assembler (MIA, Green et al. unpublished, available from the authors upon request), in total 381,833 (3%) of the merged sequences could be aligned to the revised Cambridge Reference Sequence (NC_012920.1, [6]). These were then used to call sample consensus sequences for positions covered at least twice (Table S1). Comparing GC content and coverage for every sequence position (Figure S2), the distributions are not highly correlated. However, the regions of low coverage and high coverage are similar between samples. Based on mitochondrial coverage, 38 samples whose mtDNA overlapping regions span 13,687 bases were used for analysis”.

Then the sequences reported by Ian Logan, full of no calls, aren’t of ancient DNA, but of modern Croatians.
We, who have been tested by FTDNA, do think that an FGS has no call, and only a damaged DNA have them. What a pity!
It remains to ascertain what Annie Mouse says on “Dienekes’ Anthropology blog”, that ancient hg. H, found in Middle East, is very different from the European ones.

Where are all these Middle Easterner descendants of this haplogroup?

I think it isn’t necessary to be named Svante Paabo to understand that the T2b with the highest variance (then ancientness) is that found in two samples by Irene, who is Irene Pichler, who studied the Tyroleans, i.e. the ancient Rhaetians of the Italian Refugium. European T2b have nothing to do with the Middle Easterner ones found in Syria, not having none of them any mutations in HVRI present there (16218T, 16230T (but probably a mistake for 16320T),16266T, 16320T).

It remains to ascertain what Annie Mouse says on “Dienekes’ Anthropology blog”, that ancient hg. H, found in Middle East, is very different from the European ones.

Greater diversity of mtDNA H in the near east implies an origin of H in the near east.  As Fu et al describe (and as many of have been arguing for nearly 3 years) ancient DNA testing indicates that U was the dominant hg in European hunter-gathers. The new result in the Fu et al paper is analysis of periods of population expansion, which  indicates expansion of European U subclades shortly after the last glacial maximum (consistent with the theory of U expanding into Europe as the ice retreats) and a later expansion of H in the neolithic, consistent with the theory of H being dominant among the first farmers in the near east.

When you also consider the large age differences for U5 versus H1, H3, H5.... that  makes the theory of H among early European hunter gathers seem even more improbable.

New data might modify those theories, but that is where the data clearly leads us at present.

It is very likable that the first mutation of this mt H* had been 16189C. It would be interesting then to test these haplotypes for the coding region to know if there are other mutations in common with PNMKP. The region of these haplotypes are mostly Europe from Italy/Slovenia (what was for me the Italian Refugium) to Central and North-West North-East Europe. The unique far away are ZARWB (Paphos, Cyprus) and YDASA (Kermanshah, Iran=).
E6W7D is signed 189T but probably it is a mistake.

On SMGF 15 persons have the mutation 16189C. One from Greece is named Casanova and has clearly an Italian origin (Amalia Casanova, born ab 1871, Chios, Greece: 16189C, 263G, 315.1C). All the others come from the same places of Europe cited above. Only one person from Iraq (Khana Jawhar Merkhan, 1895, Aqrah, Mosul, Iraq: 16189C, 234G, 263G, 315.1C).
About one hundred, from the same places, have also the mutation 16519C.
