THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS KINDLY SUPPLIED BY CHARLES W. STONE U.S.A.

Rolf de Monhaut was a Norman knight at Hastings from, a mountainous part of Normandy. He was close enough to William I to get an estate quickly.
He built and held the Hawarden Castle in Eulowe, Flintshire, North Wales.
At the time of William II Rufus the de Monhaut heir's were used interchangeably with his in a few documents. The Castle was held for approx. 150 years when there was a lengthy dispute about their lands; which were eventually returned.
It gets more complicated as I also have a Eustace de Monte Alto or "The Norman Hunter" as the knight at Hastings. His branch becomes associated with Mold Castle, also in Wales.
Mold is a known variation of de Monhaut. His branch becomes the Maude Family and moves to Yorkshire. I found a family listing for 23 generations.
The de Monhaut's moved to the Maidens on Ayr in SW Scotland.
Later on it became part of the Cromwell era invasion of Ulster. de Monhaut was anglicized to Mahood in Ireland. At least one member moved to Tipperary. I found several large estates with the Mahood crest on the front gates. The crest itself has a cross-let thru a lions heart.
Only one other family besides the Royals have that device. de Monhaut is the official name with The College of Arms.
The last direct heir was killed in the Boer War when a lateral award was made to an Uncle or Cousin.
My original American ancestor James Mahood was born in Ireland approx. 1755 and was a Revolutionary War soldier with The Fourth Maryland Regiment of The Continental Line. The regiment was in a number of engagements including Yorktown.
Reportedly a Colonel Mahood was part of Charles Cornwallis Army. I have James Mahood's uniform records from the Maryland Archives. His land grant was in northern Butler County, Pennsylvania. There was a delay because of conflicts with Native Americans.
In approx. 1810 he established his holding and became a man of means. According to local records he died of a gunshot wound in the late 1820's. His holding is in the current town of Hooker or North Washington, PA. Descendents still live nearby..
My Grandmother, Nellie Mahood married my Grandfather William Stone in 1909. Her father was Mahood.
By the 1920 US Census there were 39 Mahood families in Pennsylvania almost certainly all descended from James Mahood.
I can provide the names of my Grandmother's sister's also.
The family's owned and operated several of the local mines, stores and hotels .
It is a fiercely independent area traditionally with the independent miner, trucker and oilman.
Nearby Grove City College is also nationally known for its independence and is Presbyterian sponsored. I graduated from a similar nationally known Presbyterian sponsored college in Michigan, Alma College.
